Pulverization and micronization: what they are and how they work

Industrial pulverization is a process used to reduce the particle size of a material, turning it into a very fine powder. This operation is very important in various industries such as the chemical, food, mining, and agrochemical sectors, where product quality and purity are critical.

Reducing particles means increasing the exposed surface area of the material. This can improve its reactivity, solubility or ease of mixing with other ingredients. In the agrochemical industry, uniform, small powders allow more effective distribution of products.

With pulverization processes it is possible to obtain micronized products, with very small particles, often less than 10-20 microns in size. To do this, specific machinery such as the micronizer is used, which operates inside the grinding chamber while maintaining controlled conditions. Through micronization, powders with very narrow and consistent particle sizes are obtained, which are essential for many high-quality industrial applications.

How a Cimma pulverizing plant works

In our Cimma plants, the crushing, grinding, pulverizing and grading processes are designed to be optimized and to maintain the original chemical and physical characteristics of the processed material. This is very important in order not to alter the product during processing.

Particle size reduction can be done in a traditional way or through advanced techniques, such as cryogenic micronization. In this case, grinding takes place at very low temperatures to crystallize heat-sensitive products or protect the flavors and natural properties of the materials.

The advantages of the pulverizer with integrated classifier

The heart of the ‘plant is the pulverizer with integrated classifier. This all-in-one technology offers several advantages:

  • Precise particle size control: the classifier immediately separates particles according to their size. Thus, a uniform and controlled powder is obtained in a single step.
  • Increased efficiency: the material no longer undergoes pulverization and classification steps resulting in reduced process and energy consumption.
  • Optimized purity: rapid particle separation reduces the time the product remains inside the chamber, preventing excessive temperature rise.

Characteristics of major components

Our plants use elements such as the hammer mill with dynamic classifier, in-line microseparator, cyclones, and process filters to improve pulverization quality. These systems can be customized according to the type of material and production requirements.

  • Hammer mill with dynamic classifier: is used for pulverization and classification. The speed of the classifier dynamically adjusts the particle size, ensuring an accurate end product.
  • In-line microseparator: is used as the main classification or post-classification machine after the hammer mill with classifier. To ensure an accurate end product, the particle size is dynamically adjusted with the speed of the classifier.
  • Cyclones: is used for the abatement of the main product and separation of the fine product fraction. These can be used in-line for multi-pass processes.
  • Process filters with suction: is used downstream of the pulverization line to keep the airflow under vacuum and deliver the pulverized product to the cyclone and/or filter itself. Suction dynamically adjusts the particle size through the classifier, ensuring an accurate end product.

Applications in various fields

Our plants are widely used in multiple industries to produce powders that must have precise cut and particle size distribution, increase specific surface area, and maintain chemical and organoleptic properties.
